Gmail SMTP Issues with attachments

A few *2Gmail plugin users (including myself) have recently (mid November, 2010) started seeing the very informative and purposely vague "Oops! An Error Occurred while sending your email." error message.

Debugging revealed the actual server resonse:

421 4.7.0 Temporary System Problem. Try again later (SF).

A quick search through the Gmail help forums, reveals that lots of people are having the exact same problem with various email clients. The issue seems limited to users of smtp.gmail.com that are trying to send attachments. The difference in behavior is that, previously, any email below Gmail's stated 25MB limit would go through, now, much smaller emails fail at random. It is important to note that in some cases the emails do go through, despite the error message from the SMTP server.

Some discussions:

Unfortunately, there seems to be no way to contact the Gmail team other than this form nor is there any official statement about the problem. Perhaps I'll add "retry" options in the next versions of the plugin.

Update:
Google say they are aware of the problem and working on a solution

Update #2 (Dec 3.2010):
Google say they have solved the problem. Seems to be working again for me!
